Description
Townend Cottage is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, which was refashioned in the 19th century. It is constructed of limestone rubble with quoins and gritstone dressings. The roof is made of graduated slate and features moulded stone copings and kneelers on the gables on the east side, along with a projecting eaves band. The building has brick gable end and ridge stacks. Originally two bays, it was extended to three bays in the 19th century. The cottage has two storeys plus attics.
The windows include two small-paned casements that were inserted into shallower, originally mullioned windows with hoodmoulds. On the west side, there is a doorcase featuring a massive ashlar, chamfered lintel and quoins, topped with a hoodmould, leading to a glazed panelled door. Above this door, a 19th-century window has been inserted into an earlier window, alongside a three-light chamfered mullion window with small-paned casements. A 19th-century addition includes a glazed door with casements above. Additionally, there is an attached garden wall made of limestone rubble, which has dressed coping, quoins, and gatepiers.
