Description
The Gate Inn is a public house dated 1616, with alterations made in 1874. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone with painted dressings and features a plain tile roof, one gable end, and two ridge brick stacks. The building has a projecting eaves band and stands two storeys high with a three-bay front.
On the north elevation, to the west of a blocked doorcase with a lintel inscribed '1616' (now partly filled with an iron bar casement), there is a projecting gabled stone porch. The gable has a datestone inscribed '1874'. To the east of the blocked doorcase is a recessed and chamfered window with modern casements. Above this window and the porch are two 3-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows with casements. Further east, there is a 19th-century door with a glazing bar sash above it. Adjacent to this door is a single-storey gabled projection with stone copings and kneelers.
The rear elevation features 17th-century windows that were enlarged later in that century. Inside, there is a panelled parlour at the southwest end and remains of an early partition that have been incorporated into the bar area.
