Description

This stone milepost dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is a square-sectioned gritstone pillar with smoothly-dressed faces and lightly tooled sides, standing approximately 1 metre tall. The milepost is set into the northern verge of the lane that connects the settlements of Wirksworth and Belper, running in a south-east to north-west direction. The south-west face is inscribed with "LONDON 139, DERBY 12, WIRKSWORTH," and features incised gloved hands pointing in two directions. There are also later inscriptions that include survey benchmarks.
