Description
The Old Bear Inn is a public house dating from the mid-18th century. It is constructed from regularly coursed, squared gritstone with quoins, plain gables, end brick ridge stacks, and a plain tiled roof. The building has an 'L' plan layout, with recently remodelled single-storey extensions at the rear.
The south elevation features two storeys with attics and four bays, with the western bay being gabled and advanced. The central doorway has a quoined surround, a deeply bracketed flat hood, and a 20th-century door. On either side of the doorway are stacked window openings that were originally flush mullioned but now have 20th-century glazing bar casements within old surrounds. The first and attic floor windows are of two lights, while the ground floor openings are three lights, which have been reduced in height by infill at the base. There are 20th-century shutters on the ground floor. Above the doorway is a two-stage stair window with a flush surround and a shallow arched head to the upper light. The advanced wing has a 20th-century three-light casement on the ground floor and a first-floor doorway on the east side elevation, accessed by a flight of stone steps. Both this opening and the plain ground floor doorway below have plain planked doors.
