Description

The Church of All Saints is an Anglican church located in Alderwasley, built between 1849 and 1850 by H I Stevens. It is constructed from ashlar gritstone, starting from a shallow plinth and featuring a continuous band course that links the window cills, a continuous carved corbel table, and coped gables with moulded kneelers. The gables are topped with crucifix finials, and the building has a graduated slate roof, designed in the Early English style.

The church has a five-bay nave with a shallow sidewall porch, north and south transepts, a north sidewall tower, and a chancel. The west end of the nave has set back buttresses and three tall lancet windows with hoodmoulds that have stops. The second bay features a shallow porch with a coped gable and a steeply pointed arched doorway that has a deeply undercut surround with attached shafts. The planked door is adorned with decorative scrollwork on the strap hinges.

The southeast transept includes shallow set-back buttresses and a 2-light pointed arched window with stylised 'Y' tracery. The chancel's side wall has two lancets beneath a hoodmould with carved head stops, and between these windows is a shallow pilaster. The chancel gable features a triple lancet window beneath a single hoodmould, with head stops, and the lancets are designed to pierce the ashlar like plate tracery. The north side door of the chancel has a deeply moulded surround decorated with nail head ornament and attached columns.

At the rear side wall, there is a three-stage tower with set back buttresses on the first stage, bold projecting mouldings on the upper stages, and a tall pyramidal cap. The belfry openings are trefoil-headed and fitted with louvres.
