Description
Alderwasley War Memorial is a First World War memorial believed to have been completed shortly after 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of granite, concrete, and sandstone and is located within the grounds of Alderwasley Park.
The memorial features a granite Celtic cross with a raised knotwork design, set on a gently tapering square shaft that rises from a cairn made of loose sandstone boulders surrounding a concrete core.
On the north face of the cross shaft, a plaque commemorates the dedication: ALDERWASLEY/ THE/ GLORIOUS/ DEAD/ 1914 – 1919. Additionally, a granite slab embedded in the north face of the cairn lists the names of the ten individuals who fell in the First World War.
A further granite plaque affixed to the cross shaft includes the names of the three individuals who fell in the Second World War, along with the dedication 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES).
