Description
The Chapel of St Margaret, now serving as a village hall, dates from the early 16th century and was restored in the 20th century. It is constructed of massive coursed gritstone and features moulded copings on the gables, moulded kneelers, and a stone slated roof.
The south elevation is asymmetrical, with two-light recessed chamfered mullioned windows at the center and a blocked doorway to the east. This doorway has a four-centred arch to the lintel soffit and a quoined chamfered surround beneath a dripmould. Further to the east, there is another two-light chamfered mullioned window with segmental arched heads.
The west end includes a double doorway with a shouldered surround that supports a reset lintel featuring a four-centred arch to the soffit, adorned with floral motifs and nail head ornament along the margins. Above this doorway is a slightly curved dripmould with carved heads at either end. Various other carved stones are incorporated into the masonry. Additionally, there is a carved plaque made of alabaster or a similar material set behind glass above the blocked doorway. The east gable has a set-off to the masonry and features a tall three-light chamfered mullioned window with segmental arched heads, along with a plain version of this window at the gable apex.
