Description

Nos 9-13 on Barnwell Lane are three houses, likely built in the 1780s or 1790s. They are constructed from coursed rubble and feature a tiled roof. The original rubble stacks, which are rendered, are the only ones remaining from the early Arkwright houses, as others have been replaced with red and black brick. The layout resembles the Arkwright phase I type, consisting of a single unit with rear services, three storeys, and side stairs positioned against the end and party walls behind and to one side of the front entrances.

The front elevations have two bays; the entrance bay lacks windows above, while the other bay contains two-light stone mullioned windows on each floor. The doorways feature large rectangular lintels with crude capitals and bases to the imposts, all of which are tooled. The ridge stacks are made of red and black brick. The doorways on the front elevation remain intact. The windows are 20th-century casements with diamond leading. There is a late 20th-century porch added to No. 13, which also has a window added at the first-floor level. Low 20th-century extensions are present on the left side. The rear includes a two-storey lean-to and a gabled dormer for No. 13, with single-light first-floor windows that appear to be original.
