Description
Nos 46-52 on Cromford Hill are a row of four houses built in the early 19th century, as indicated on the 1841 Tithe Map. The houses are constructed from coursed rubble, with No. 50 featuring a Welsh slate roof, while the others have reconstituted slab or corrugated concrete roofs. These houses were possibly built for Richard Arkwright to house textile workers for his mills. They are two storeys high and have a plan that is a variation of the Arkwright phase I type, with side stairs positioned against the end and party walls located behind the front entrance. Each house has two window bays, with doorways set under large lintels that do not have windows above them. The other bay features windows under cambered arches, which have all been replaced with late 20th-century casements or top openers in the case of No. 48. There is a porch at No. 52.
