Description

This is a milepost located on the south side of Kedleston Road in Quarndon, dating from the early 19th century. It is made of cast iron and has a triangular shape with an upper part that slopes to a gabled back plate. The inscription on the milepost indicates distances: '129/LONDON/QUARNDON/HULLAND WARD 6 MILES/DERBY/3 MILES.' The Kedleston road was part of the historic route from London to Manchester and was the first road in Derbyshire to be improved under a Turnpike Act in 1738.
