Description
The Chalybeate Wellhouse is an early 19th-century well house located on Church Road in the parish of Quarndon. It is constructed from rock-faced sandstone and sandstone ashlar, built into the hillside with a rock-faced retaining wall. The building is a single storey with single bays on either side of a canted projection. It features two plain bands and an embattled and coped parapet. The canted projection includes a three-bay open arcade with pointed arches. To the left, there is a doorway with a pointed arch and a plank door, while to the right, there is a blind window with a pointed arch. Inside the arcade, iron railings enclose the former pool. A plaque on the building is inscribed with information about the 17th-century Chalybeate Spring Well, which was once a famous spa known for its medicinal iron-rich waters and was visited by Daniel Defoe in 1727.
