Description
Hillcrest is a house, possibly originating in the 17th century, with a dated plaque indicating 1744. It was raised and altered in the 20th century. The house is constructed of ironstone ashlar with Uppingham stone quoins, a flush lintel band, and a projecting first-floor band course. It has a Welsh slate roof and two stone chimneys with blue brick caps. The building is two storeys high with four bays, the leftmost bay being at a slight angle. The windows are 20th-century 3-light wooden casements with horizontal glazing bars and stone sills; the upper windows have wooden lintels. A small rectangular window with a moulded surround is in the first floor of the left bay, above a wide board door. The third bay has a 20th-century door set within a 17th-century moulded stone surround featuring a four-centred arch. A plaque above the door has a chamfered cornice and the date displayed on a lozenge. A garage extension is located to the right. The rear wall is of rubble stone with embedded carved stone heads. The left bay features a stone window with chamfered mullions set into a re-used sill and lintel that were originally intended to accommodate ovolo mullions. The house sustained significant fire damage in the early 20th century and consequently has no surviving interior features.
