Description
The perimeter walls and railings at the east end of Oakham Cemetery were likely built as part of a design by Pearson Bellamy and J Spence Hardy in the 1860s. The front boundary wall features end piers and railings. The piers and plinth wall are made of ironstone with pale ashlar limestone dressings, while the railings and standards are cast iron. The structure consists of two articulated sections flanking the Cemetery Lodge, with 11 panels of railings on the left and 10 on the right. The plinth wall has deeply-chamfered copings, and the broad end piers have a single, offset buttress and brattished copings. The railings include cusped tracery beneath a finialled mid-rail, a top rail with spearhead spikes, and intermediate bars adorned with fleur de lys. Each panel of railings is linked by square, open-work standards featuring tracery, brattished caps, and three-dimensional fleur de lys finials.
