Description
The Unicorn Inn and adjoining property, now a doctor's surgery and shop, dates to the 17th century, with a 18th-century front and a house likely built in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of stone, partly rendered and painted white, with a Welsh slate roof and stone ridge and east end stacks. It is three storeys high. The inn section has three windows and features quoins. A central throughway is defined by a moulded architrave and cornice. A 19th-century canted bay window and a door are set within a moulded architrave on the left side, while the right side incorporates a late 19th-century shop front. A moulded band runs between the ground and first floors. The first floor displays a carved panel depicting a unicorn and a sundial, flanked by 6/6 sash windows. The second floor has three 3/3 sash windows. The adjoining house section is two windows wide, with quoins. It has a late 19th-century shop front on the ground floor and full-length 9/6 sash windows in raised architraves with keystones on the first floor. The second floor mirrors the inn with three 3/3 sash windows in raised architraves. A rear wing of the inn, two storeys high and divided by a moulded string, incorporates two 4-centred arched doorways, now windows, with further windows to the right and left, one now a door. Above are two 3-light ovolo-moulded mullioned windows. A blocked 2-light cellar window is also present. Inside, the staircase features reused barley-sugar and turned balusters.
