Description

No 1, The Green is a house and post office dated 1684, as indicated by a plaque on the left gable. The building has later extensions to the right for a shop and to the rear. It is constructed of coursed ironstone rubble with pale limestone window dressings and features a Collyweston slate roof. The gables are coped and have ogee half-pendants, with flanking chimneys—one on the left made of ashlar with a moulded cornice and the other on the right made of 20th-century brick. The building is two storeys high with an attic and originally has two bays. It has a chamfered plinth.

The front of the house features 20th-century three-light hardwood casements set in pale limestone surrounds, showing traces of ovolo mouldings. There is a blank flush plaque in the centre. The left gable retains original windows with ovolo-moulded mullions and cyma recta cornices; the first-floor window has three lights, while the attic window has two lights, with one light blocked in each case. There is a single light with an ovolo-moulded surround on the ground floor. The right gable has an altered two-light window with a 17th-century surround and cornice, along with a lower 19th-century extension of one bay that now contains the shop. The 20th-century extensions to the rear incorporate former outbuildings.
