Description
The Elizabethan School Room is a historic school building, now used as an art studio, dating from 1584. It was extended around 1830 and restored around 1960. The structure is made of squared stone and features a Collyweston stone slate roof with coped gables, a plinth, and a cornice. The original building consists of one large room, which is illuminated on the south side by four 3-light stone mullioned windows with ovolo moulding and transoms, positioned high up. The west gable end includes a 4-light stone mullioned window, also with ovolo moulding, featuring a king mullion and a centrally-set transom. Above this window, there is a cornice with inscriptions in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, along with a more recent inscription in Latin below. The building has a bellcote, and the east window is similar to the west window but has been renewed. All windows are fitted with leaded panes. Inside, the roof structure was renewed around 1960. There is a one-storey extension to the north that has two windows and a door, which has been boarded up since 1983.
