Description

The Vaults is a public house that dates back to the 17th century, with later enlargement in the 18th century to the west. The original 17th-century section is built of ashlar and features a Collyweston stone slate roof at the front, while the rear has a plain tile roof. The building consists of a main block and a cross-wing, standing two storeys tall with an attic. The north front is one window wide, showcasing 19th-century three-light windows on both the ground and first floors, along with a hipped two-light dormer above. The rear reveals the cross-wing, which has a coped gable and a stone stack with a brick shaft. There is a mix of fenestration, including blocked 17th-century windows with mullions and cornices. The 18th-century section is constructed of rubble with a fine ashlar north front, a Collyweston stone slate roof, coped gables, and stone and brick stacks at the west and east ends, respectively. The north front features a three-window range and a coved cornice. The central entrance has double boarded doors flanked by tripartite windows with glazing bars beneath double keystones. The first floor has a central full-length opening that is partly boarded and includes a 20th-century casement window, flanked by 20th-century sash windows with glazing bars. To the right of the entrance, there is a cellar opening. The building was formerly known as the Swan Inn.
