Description
Woodthorpe House Community Centre is a house that was later used as a school and is now a community centre. It dates from the early 19th century, with additions and alterations made in the mid-19th century. The building was converted in the late 20th century. It is constructed of stucco and has artificial slate roofs, with a truncated rear wall stack. The windows are mainly original glazing-bar sashes.
The building is two storeys tall and has a three-window range. The garden front features two large bow windows with three lights each, topped with conical roofs and deep bracketed eaves. The larger sashes are on the ground floor, one of which has been altered to become a glazed door. In the centre, there is a renewed door and overlight, with a sash window above it. The street front has irregular fenestration with glazing-bar sashes and an off-centre doorcase that includes columns and a cornice.
Inside, the hallway contains the former portico, which has two pairs of Doric columns forming arcades and a dentillated cross beam. Under one of the arcades are two round-arched niches. There is a stone cantilever winder stair and landing featuring iron stick balusters and a scrolled handrail. The stairwell has round arches, a cornice, and a skylight. The ground floor rooms facing the garden have cornices, one of which is enriched, and one ceiling features an anthemion border. There are also carved and fretted wooden pelmets and four original six-panel doors.
