Description
The Church of St Martin, built in 1937, was designed by Heazell & Sons of Nottingham. Constructed primarily of buff brick with brick and reconstituted stone dressings, it features Roman tile roofs and is designed in a Byzantine style. The building comprises a nave and chancel under a continuous roof, an apse, a vestry, a north chapel, aisles, an organ chamber, and a narthex.
The exterior exhibits a triglyph frieze and a coped east gable. The narthex, chapel, and aisles have tile coping to their flat roofs. Round-arched windows and openings are a prominent feature, with rebated surrounds. The chancel has three windows on each side. The apse is half-domed, with a window to the north and south. The nave has three clerestory windows on each side. The west end features dentillated eaves and a round window with mullions arranged in a Maltese cross pattern. The single-story vestry, to the south-east, has a flat roof and coped parapet. A round-arched door is flanked by triple windows with flat heads and brick mullions on the south side. The east side has three windows, one round-headed. The north-east chapel features two east windows and three to the north. The hipped organ chamber and porch, to the north, has a double door with a fanlight. The north aisle has two pairs of windows, while the south aisle has two paired windows, a single window to the east, and a window at the east end. The narthex, single-story, has three round-arched glazed openings to the west, and double doorways with fanlights to the north and south.
The interior is rendered, with a rendered barrel vault and exposed brick arches, pilasters, and piers. A plain round arch leads to the apse, and there is a round-arched piscina. The chancel has a three-bay arcade on each side, with square piers and doorways at the east ends. To the west is a marble screen wall incorporating a pulpit and reading desk. A northwest arched recess houses the organ console and pipes. The nave arcades, over three bays, have a narrower west bay and square piers with ashlar capitals. The north chapel has a king post roof supported by corbels, and patterned stained glass in the east windows. The aisles have cross arches and round-arched doorways to the east. The south aisle includes doors to the vestry. The narthex has three round-arched openings into the church, with imposts and glazed doors. Original panelled stalls and desks are present.
