Description

Woodthorpe Grange is a late 18th-century house, significantly altered in 1874, now used as offices. It is located on Woodthorpe Drive, Nottingham. The house is constructed of rock-faced sandstone and ashlar, with shallow-pitched hipped slate roofs and seven stone chimney stacks. It follows a T-plan, with a rear range dating back to the late 18th century that was reclad in 1874, and a front range added in that year.

The exterior features chamfered quoins, a chamfered plinth, a moulded first-floor sill band, moulded eaves topped with a balustrade. The west garden front has three windows; the recessed centre has a tripartite plain sash with a central segmental pediment above it, and above, a similar window in a plain ashlar surround. Either side are two-storey canted bay windows with plain sashes and moulded ashlar surrounds. The north front features a single plain sash on each floor, with external stacks either side. To the left is a larger sash above a Venetian window with a moulded ashlar surround. A lower, set-back wing extends to the left. The south entrance front has a single plain sash either side of an external stack on both floors, with a projecting porch to the right; this porch has coupled pilasters and a balustrade parapet. The round-headed doorway has a pair of double-panel doors and a plain fanlight. The rear wing, set back to the right, has a central plain sash flanked by tripartite sashes on both floors.

The interior was completely refitted in 1874. The entrance hall has a glazed wooden screen and an inner screen with green marble Corinthian columns and pilasters, a Minton tile floor, dentillated coving, Classical door surrounds, and a single flight of stairs with a return. The staircase has an ornate iron balustrade with a wooden handrail. Three reception rooms to the west have deeply moulded coving, Classical doorcases, and fine grey marble fireplaces; linking segmental arches between these rooms are now blocked. Upper floors retain similar interior features, including doorcases, fireplaces, and coving. Some rooms also retain corner boxes for the gas ventilator system which vented through the ceiling roses. The house is believed to have been built for a local lace manufacturer named Small.
