Description

The Chapel and Theatre at Mapperley Hospital is a disused hospital chapel and theatre built in 1887, designed by G T Hine. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs. The building has a dentilated brick cornice and ashlar coped gables with kneelers, with the south-west gable topped by an ashlar bellcote. It is two storeys high, with a moulded ashlar plinth and tall brick buttresses with set-offs.

The south-west front includes two tall segment-headed windows with 4-light ashlar transom and mullion windows, a single similar 3-light window to the south-east, and five similar windows to the north-west. The ground floor has later additions. The upper floor features two tall 4-light pointed arched windows with rectilinear tracery, along with a central circular wheel window with similar tracery. A central buttress is topped with a gabled niche. The north-west side elevation has six 2-light pointed arched windows, while the south-east elevation has four similar windows.

Inside, the theatre on the ground floor has a deeply coved plaster ceiling with moulded ribs and some decorative panels, with walls divided by tall plaster pilasters. The stage at the north-east end has an altered proscenium arch. Above, the chapel features five broad timber single hammer-beam trusses supported by wooden wall columns on either side. It has dado panelling and deeply moulded skirting boards, along with two segment-arched doorways in flat-headed surrounds. The ashlar chancel arch has moulded half-columns, and the short narrow chancel includes a Minton tiled floor, a boarded timber roof with ribs, and a timber organ case in the side arch. The chancel also features a tiled dado and reredos.
