Description
The allotment shed on plot B305 at Hungerhill Gardens Allotments is a late 19th-century garden shed. It is constructed of timber and has a Welsh slate roof. The shed is single storey, featuring a main facade with a central doorway flanked by two-light casement windows that include glazing bars. The side gables are adorned with decorative barge-boards and finials, while the front eaves are similarly decorated with an eaves board.
Inside, the shed has timber walls lined with horizontal planking and includes a single central fireplace with an iron grate.
The Hungerhill allotment gardens were established in 1604-05 when they were leased to 30 burgesses. In 1842, the Nottingham Independent Cottage Garden Society requested land for gardens and was granted 50 plots in Hungerhill Gardens. By the 1880s, the number of gardens had increased to 130, although some were lost to housing development. An 1882 Ordnance Survey map shows numerous garden houses, sheds, and greenhouses throughout the three sections of these gardens, which now comprise Hungerhill Allotments: Gorseyclose Gardens, Hungerhill Gardens, and Stonepit Coppice Gardens. These allotments are recognized as nationally significant by the English Heritage Parks and Gardens Register, listed at Grade II*.
The allotment shed on plot B305 is listed for its rarity and good condition as a late 19th-century structure, and it is an important part of the Grade II* registered Historic Park and Garden.
