Description
Derwen House is a house that has been used as a school, built in 1831 with later alterations. The building is finished in stucco and features bitumen-coated slate hipped roofs with deep bracketed eaves and rendered axial stacks. It is designed in a Picturesque stuccoed villa style and has an approximately square plan, with the entrance on the east side and the main rooms facing the south garden front. There are minor extensions from the late 19th or 20th century on the rear north and west sides.
The exterior is two storeys high with an attic and features a nearly symmetrical three-bay east front. The windows are mostly 12-pane sashes, and there is a central doorway with a stone Tuscan portico supported by paired columns. Two hipped dormers break the eaves. The south garden front has a 1:2 bay arrangement, with the left bay set back. The sashes have glazing bars, and there is a tripartite window on the ground floor right, along with a large central French casement flanked by sidelights and a tripartite window above, both adorned with segmental fanlights and console brackets.
The rear north and west elevations include the minor later extensions. Although the interior was not inspected, it is reported to have original joinery, including panelled doors, an open-string staircase with stick balusters and a moulded mahogany handrail that is wreathed over the newel. The servants' stair features an unusual wreathed handrail, and the landing has a vaulted plaster ceiling with a lantern. There are a pair of mahogany bookcases with volute and anthemion cresting, and one chamber has splayed panelled window shutters. Most of the chimneypieces appear to be Edwardian, and there is a shower in the bathroom that dates from around the 1930s.
