Description
Gobowen War Memorial is situated at the junction of Old Whittington Road and The Cross in Gobowen. It features a limestone cenotaph with two white marble inscription tablets on the east face, listing the names of those who fell in the First and Second World Wars.
At the top of the cenotaph on the south face, there is a wreath carved in relief with the year 1914 at its center, also in relief. Below this wreath is an incised inscription that reads "YE HAVE NOT DIED IN VAIN." On the north face, there is a second wreath carved in relief with the year 1919 at its center, accompanied by the inscription "THERE IS A LIFE IN DEATH."
The east face of the memorial features another incised inscription that states "THE GLORIOUS DEAD." Below this is a carved arched stone frame that includes a ledge for placing wreaths, which holds an incised arched marble tablet reading "ROLL OF HONOUR (NAMES)." Below this is a later rectangular plaque inscribed with "1939 – 1945 (NAMES)." At the base of the memorial, there is a third marble plaque that reads "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN EVER GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS DISTRICT WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR. GOD PROVED THEM AND FOUND THEM WORTHY FOR HIMSELF." The cenotaph stands on a small square area of paving.
