Description
The Teddington War Memorial is a First World War memorial that also includes inscriptions for the Second World War. It was designed by architect Mr. Francis W. Doyle Jones and was unveiled in 1921.
Constructed from Portland stone, the memorial is a tall cenotaph. The upper section of the front face features a relief of a sword and a laurel wreath, with the inscription 'OUR / GLORIOUS / DEAD' below. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the rest of the front face and on the other three sides, arranged by year. The lower back face has the inscription: 'LIVE YE FOR ENGLAND / WE FOR ENGLAND DIED'.
The cenotaph stands on a plinth, which has the inscription on the front face: '1939-1945 / AND TO RECORD THE GRATITUDE OF THEIR / FELLOW TOWNSMEN TO THOSE FROM TEDDINGTON / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR OUR FREEDOM AND SAFETY / WHETHER IN THE FIGHTING SERVICES / OR ON THE HOME FRONT / WE WILL REMEMBER THEM'. This is set on a two-step platform.
