Description

The Ventnor War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, designed by Stephen Canning Day, with later additions following the Second World War. It is constructed from Ventnor ragstone and Welsh slate and is situated on Park Avenue, at the northern edge of Ventnor Park. The memorial takes the form of a ragstone cenotaph set upon a plinth, flanked by tapered buttresses, and standing on a three-stepped platform. The north face features a carved stone wreath with the words "OUR/ GLORIOUS/ DEAD" incised below. Beneath this is a recessed slate panel bearing the inscription β€œTO THE GLORY OF GOD./ IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN OF VENTNOR/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)". A slate plaque on the south face commemorates the men and women of Ventnor who lost their lives in both the First World War (1939-1945) and the Second World War (1914-1918), listing names of those in military service and civilian life.
