Description

VENTNOR

766/0/10019 NEWPORT ROAD 03-AUG-09 Cemetery Mortuary

GV II Mortuary. Built circa 1870, architect Mr F Newman of Ryde. Early English style.

Constructed of Isle of Wight stone rubble with ashlar dressings on a stone plinth. It has a gabled slate roof with ridge cresting. The gable end has coping and carved kneelers. The main entrance faces south west and has a round-headed niche and an arched doorcase with hood moulding with carved stone corbels. There is a C20 plank door. The north west side has one flat-arched opening. The other sides have no openings. The interior was not inspected.

HISTORY: The Newport Road Cemetery was opened in 1870 and the two chapels and lodge were designed by Mr F Newman of Ryde. The mortuary is built of identical building materials and the same Early English style, so is likely to be of the same date and by the same architect. The mortuary is shown on the 1898 Ordnance Survey map.

REASONS FOR DESIGNATION: * It is an Early English style mortuary of circa 1870 designed by F Newman of Ryde. * It is well crafted in local stone with decorative details and is more elaborate than many mortuaries. * It was built by the same architect as the surviving cemetery chapel (q.v.). * It is situated in an attractively landscaped cemetery wih extensive views over downland.
