Description
The Cemetery Mortuary, built around 1870, is designed in the Early English style by architect Mr. F. Newman of Ryde. It is made from Isle of Wight stone rubble with ashlar dressings, set on a stone plinth, and features a gabled slate roof with ridge cresting. The gable end includes coping and carved kneelers. The main entrance, facing southwest, has a round-headed niche and an arched doorcase with hood moulding supported by carved stone corbels, leading to a 20th-century plank door. The northwest side has one flat-arched opening, while the other sides are without openings. The interior was not inspected.
The Newport Road Cemetery opened in 1870, with the chapels and lodge also designed by Mr. F. Newman. The mortuary shares the same building materials and Early English style, suggesting it was constructed around the same time and by the same architect. It is depicted on the 1898 Ordnance Survey map.
The mortuary is designated for its Early English style, craftsmanship in local stone with decorative details, and its more elaborate design compared to many mortuaries. It was built by the same architect as the surviving cemetery chapel and is located in a beautifully landscaped cemetery with extensive views over the downland.
