Description

The Lace Market Theatre in Nottingham is a former Unitarian chapel that was later used as a school and is now a theatre. It was built around 1760, remodeled in the early 19th century, and converted for theatre use between 1965 and 1972. The building is constructed of red brick with a stucco front and has a concrete tile roof. It features a plinth and a coped rear gable. The windows have been renewed and include glazing bars. The structure is two stories tall and has a five-by-four window arrangement.

The front of the building is designed in the Renaissance Revival style, characterized by a minor cornice and an elaborately shaped gable adorned with finials. There is a central doorway flanked by pilasters and topped with a pediment, featuring renewed double doors and an overlight. On either side of the doorway, there are dummy windows followed by a blocked door with an overlight. Above these, there is a blank panel flanked by single windows, with smaller windows above, all of which have cornices. The left side of the building has four blocked openings, while the right side has a single blocked opening, with all openings having segment-headed tops.

Inside, the theatre features a king post roof supported by struts, collars, wind braces, and double purlins, largely made from reused timber and showing signs of fire damage. The principal rafters terminate at collar level. The building served as a school from around 1832 until about 1850 before being converted into a warehouse for lace and other goods, as noted by a plaque inside the theatre.
