Description
Nos. 2, 4, and 6 Broadway are lace warehouses, now used as workrooms and offices, built around 1855. They were likely designed by TC Hine of Nottingham for the Birkin family and have been altered in the late 20th century. The buildings are constructed of red brick, partly rendered, with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. They feature a plinth, a first-floor cornice, a string course, an eaves cornice, and a low coped parapet. The structures are three storeys tall, with some sections having attics, and display a window arrangement of 3:7.
Most of the windows are original, consisting of round-arched and segment-arched 12-pane sashes. The projecting corner block on the right has three sets of three windows and rounded corners with single windows. To the left, there is a segment-arched moulded doorcase with a keystone and the Birkin monogram. The front facing Broadway has a recessed central bay and three windows on each floor.
The right return, facing St Mary's Gate, features a rendered ground floor with single and tripartite glazing bar sashes and a 20th-century door. Above this, there are three flat-headed sashes followed by three round-headed ones. To the left, facing Broadway, is a block with six windows, a segment-arched door to the right, four basement openings, and regular fenestration. Further left is an entrance bay with a round-arched porch flanked by transomed sidelights with wrought-iron screens, leading up to a round-arched door. Above this entrance is a square oriel window with three lights on shaped brackets, followed by two segment-arched windows.
