Description

Eldon Chambers is a house that has been converted into a shop and café. It dates from the mid-18th century, with the ground floor remodeled around 1868, possibly by Robert Evans. The building was restored in the late 20th century. It is constructed of red brick with painted ashlar dressings and has a plain tile roof featuring coped gables and two gable stacks. The first floor has an incomplete sill band and a moulded eaves cornice with paired modillions. The structure has three storeys plus attics and a four-window range. Most windows are 12-pane sashes with shaped lintels and double keystones. On the first floor, there are three sashes to the left and a canted wooden bay window to the right, which has a dentillated cornice and glazing bar sashes. Above this, there are three similar windows to the left and a Diocletian window to the right, featuring Gothick glazing bars in the side lights. There are also two wooden pedimented dormers with casements. The ground floor includes a round-arched carriage opening on the left with panelled wooden gates, a datestone, and a monogram, along with a relief panel that reads "Eldon Chambers." To the right, there is a late 20th-century shopfront with a recessed door flanked by two windows with round-arched lights. The rear wing has three storeys plus attics and a six-window range, with regular fenestration that mainly consists of segment-headed glazing bar sashes.
