Description

Cleaves Hall is a lecture hall that has been converted into residential accommodation, dated 1883. It was designed by Parry & Walker of Nottingham for the Castle Gate Congregational Church. The building features red brick with blue brick and ashlar dressings, topped with a slate roof, and is styled in the Lombardic-Venetian Revival style.

The structure has a plinth and dentillated cornices on each floor, along with a richly bracketed eaves cornice. The original windows are plain sashes with segment heads, and the central ground floor windows are protected by cast-iron guards. The front of the building is three stories tall and consists of three bays, with angle pilasters. The central section projects and contains three windows beneath an enriched pediment adorned with finials and iron crests, flanked by side bays.

To the right, there is a wider entrance bay topped with a plain pediment. The central part features three windows on each floor, each with enriched keystones and linked hood moulds. The first and second-floor windows have two lights and ashlar mullions. The left side bay includes a segment-arched double door with shafts, a tripartite window above, and a pair of shouldered windows above that. The right side bay has a single window on the lower floors and a pair of shouldered windows above.

The entrance bay has a rebated round-arched doorway with shafts and enriched spandrels, leading to a panelled double door and fanlight. Above this doorway is a triple window with brick mullions, followed by a pair of shouldered windows. The right return of the building features four windows on each floor. The rear range is two stories high and constructed in white glazed brick.
