Description

22, 24, and 26 Lister Gate is a general store that has been converted into a clothes shop. It was built between 1936 and 1937 by the in-house architects for FW Woolworth Ltd and has been altered in the late 20th century. The building features a steel frame with a facade made of reconstituted stone, and the roof is not visible behind the parapet. It showcases an Art Deco style with a slightly convex symmetrical facade and three storeys plus attics, comprising a total of 13 windows arranged in a pattern of 1:3:5:3:1.

The ground floor has a full-width shopfront from the late 20th century, featuring recessed central doors flanked by plate glass windows, a tiled plinth, and a stone veneered fascia. Above this, the central bay contains five windows separated by chamfered pilasters, and there are fielded metal panels between the first and second floors. The attics have three smaller gable-headed windows. The side bays, also divided by similar pilasters, feature three windows set within a coved surround.

Above these windows, there is a shaped frieze and cornice, with ribbed ornamentation at the heads of the pilasters and between them. A sham balcony is located between the first and second floors, with fielded metal panels below the square attic windows. The building culminates above the parapet in a stylised gable that has projecting central ribs and half-round coved brackets at each end. The end bays contain single windows, with metal panels between the first and second floors and square attic windows in coved surrounds. This building is an unusual large-scale example of the Art Deco style.
