Description
17 Castle Gate is a mid-18th century town house that has been converted into offices. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof behind a renewed brick parapet, along with two brick gable stacks. The building has a plinth and rusticated quoins that form pilasters, as well as bands at the first and second floors and sill bands on the lower floors. The eaves cornice is dentillated.
The structure has three storeys plus a basement and includes a four-window range of 12-pane sash windows, with four 9-pane sashes above. The off-centre entrance door is designed as a Venetian window, featuring a six-panel door and a cast-iron overlight, and is flanked on the left by two 12-pane sashes. All windows have shaped lintels with keystones. To the right, there is a 20th-century passage entrance and door, along with two square basement openings. The rear of the building has gabled and hipped wings with segment-headed glazing bar sashes.
Inside, there are associated rock-cut cellars, which are partly filled.
