Description

34 and 36 Castle Gate is a town house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the early 18th century and underwent alterations in the 19th century, with restoration and conversion around 1990. The building is constructed of brick with painted ashlar dressings and features a plain tile roof with blue brick coped gables and rebuilt ridge and gable stacks. It has a rendered plinth, ground floor, and first floor sill bands, along with a moulded wooden eaves cornice.

All the sash windows have wedge lintels with keystones. The building is three storeys high, plus attics, and has a four-window range of 12-pane sashes. Above these, there are four similar windows, and above again, two box dormers with glazing bar casements. The ground floor features an off-centre wooden doorcase with a hood supported by iron brackets, dating from the early 19th century, which includes a panelled door and overlight flanked by 16-pane sashes. To the right, there is a passage entrance with a wrought-iron gate and overthrow.

Inside, there are two 18th-century dogleg staircases, one of which has turned balusters and was extended in the early 19th century. No. 36 was previously listed on August 11, 1952.
