Description

29 and 31 Castle Gate are two town houses that have been converted into offices and a radio station. They were built in 1794, with the upper two storeys being a facsimile addition from the late 19th century, and some alterations made in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed of red brick, featuring ashlar dressings and a plain tile roof with side wall stacks. They have a plinth, sill bands on the lower floors, and a modillion eaves cornice. The symmetrical front has a slightly projecting central bay and consists of four storeys with a five-window range.

The windows are primarily glazing bar sashes with moulded architraves. The central tripartite sash is adorned with a pseudo-balustrade and pediment, flanked by two 12-pane sashes. The upper storey has similar windows with 9-pane sashes and lacks the central pediment. Above this, there is a smaller tripartite sash with a bracketed sill, flanked by two 6-pane sashes.

On the ground floor, there are two original Ionic ashlar doorcases with pediments and round-arched openings containing glazing bar windows. Between these doorcases is an inserted round-arched doorway with a fanlight. To the right, there are two 12-pane sashes, with the right one being a replica. To the left, there is a similar window, followed by a 20th-century vehicle entrance. The interior was refitted in the late 20th century.
