Description
43, 45 and 47 Castle Gate are three houses, now functioning as a museum, that date back to 1788. They were designed by William Stretton for Cornelius and Mary Launder. The buildings were converted and had their interiors remodeled around 1970. They are constructed of red brick with painted ashlar dressings and feature a plain tile roof with two brick ridge stacks. There is a plinth, sill bands on the lower floors, and a dentillated wooden eaves cornice. The windows have brick flat arches, and the buildings rise to three storeys with a total of nine windows featuring 12-pane sash windows. Above these, there are nine 9-pane sashes. The main entrance consists of an off-centre wooden doorcase with panelled pilasters and an entablature on brackets, along with a panelled reveal, a 6-panel door, and a fanlight. To the left of the entrance, there are two 12-pane sashes, followed by a similar doorcase. To the right, there are four more similar windows and another doorcase. The rear elevation displays regular fenestration with segment-arched glazing bar sashes. Inside, there is a wooden dogleg stair with stick balusters and several rooms that feature 6-panel doors and moulded cornices.
