Description
No. 51 Castle Gate is a house that now serves as a museum. It dates from the late 17th century and was refronted around 1800. The building underwent restoration and interior remodelling around 1970. It features a stucco exterior that is gloss painted, with a steeply pitched plain tile roof, a coped gable, and a rendered ridge stack. The structure has an ashlar plinth and parapet coping, along with a moulded wooden eaves cornice. It stands two storeys tall, plus blind attics, and has a three-window range of 12-pane sashes. Above these windows are three blank panels. The central entrance is marked by a Greek Doric wooden doorcase, which includes oval half-columns, a pediment, a panelled door, and a fanlight. On either side of the entrance, there are additional 12-pane sashes.
