Description
Leicester Fire Station, built between 1925 and 1927, was designed by A. E. and T. Sawday. This fire station features a steel frame and brick construction topped with a hipped pantile roof. The front section includes garages for eight fire engines, offices, and a recreational hall, while the attached rear section contains servicing garages and a hose drying tower.
The front range is designed in a Neo-Georgian style and is two stories high with fifteen windows. The central part projects slightly and features a raised parapet. A central porch with glazed double doors and an overlight is framed in rusticated brick with multiple keystones, and above it is a moulded parapet adorned with metal railings and the city coat-of-arms. On either side of the porch are four sets of glazed fire engine doors, and above them is a large central window with margin lights, flanked by four additional windows with metal frame margin lights. Above this, there is another central window and a raised statue of a wyvern. The lower wings on either side are set back and contain three windows each, also with metal frame margin lights.
The rear range, connected by side walls, features painted walls and glazed north light steel roofs. It has projecting side wings and a central open canopy that leads to the six-stage hose drying tower. The ground floor includes a doorway and three upper balconies, while the top stage has a balcony on each face and a clock face above, topped with a metal baluster.
