Description

Inglewood is a house with a coach house and stabling range, built in 1892 by the architect Ernest Gimson for himself. It is constructed of red brick and features a steep-pitched Swithland slate roof with gabled ends and stone coping. The building has a tall narrow gabled projection at both the front and rear and consists of two storeys and an attic.

The windows are tall sashes or casements with glazing bars set in segmental arched openings. The road-facing elevation has a roof that slopes down to the first floor, which includes a plain door. The garden elevation features two splayed bay windows made of sashes, one single storey and the other two storeys, added around 1935 by William Keay, with a decorated lead frieze below the first-floor windows. Brick chimney stacks are also present.

Inside, the house boasts a fine interior that includes a staircase hall with panelling and a staircase with a stick balustrade leading from the ground floor to the attic. The dining room features panelling and 17th-century style plasterwork on the ceiling beams and frieze, along with a stone fireplace. The drawing room has a panelled chimney breast and a simple 18th-century style fireplace. The bedrooms on the first floor and in the attic each have a complete set of fireplaces with austere stone surrounds and unique cast-iron grates in a late 18th-century style. The original doors and door furniture remain throughout.

The stabling area includes accommodation for a groom, complete with fireplaces, one of which has a range. This is a notable house designed by an eminent Arts and Crafts architect, with an interior that has been virtually unaltered and retains many interesting features.
