Description

22 Iron Gate is a 17th-century building with painted cement covering an earlier timber frame, which is believed to date from around 1540. The structure has two storeys and an attic, featuring two gables at the front with later plain bargeboards. The first storey overhangs and includes two mid-18th century three-light oriel windows, each adorned with a fluted frieze and paterae, as well as a moulded cornice. The ground storey has modern shop windows that are sympathetic to the building's character, with a passage entrance between them that includes a facsimile doorway and door. This building is part of a group that includes Nos 18 to 22, Nos 25, 26, the Former Technical College Annexe, and Nos 35 to 42 on St Mary's Gate.
