Description

Kings Lock is a lock on the Calder Cut of the Aire and Calder Navigation, opened in 1839. It was designed by the engineers George Leather and Sons of Leeds. The lock is constructed from large dressed blocks of sandstone, with some concrete repairs, and features wooden gates. It has quadrantally curved entrances at each end, along with upper and lower gates, as well as intermediate gates that were operated manually until the 1960s and are now operated hydraulically by electric power. There is an overflow sluice located at the north-west corner. A modern control cabin and bridge are not included in this listing.
