Description
The Aire and Calder Navigation Railway Viaduct, located at SE 392 248, is a railway viaduct that carries the Leeds-Derby line of the North Midland Railway Company over a cut on the Aire and Calder Navigation. It was opened in 1840, with George Stephenson as the consulting engineer. The viaduct is constructed of dressed sandstone and features a single segmental span with stepped voussoirs. There are rectangular piers at each end, and beyond these, at each outer end, there are two round-headed arches leading to the railway embankment. The structure includes a roll-moulded band and an ashlar parapet, along with numerous tie-plates.
