Description
The railway viaduct carries the Leeds-Derby line of the North Midland Railway over the River Calder. It was built in 1840, with George Stephenson as the consulting engineer. The structure is made of dressed sandstone and brick and features five semicircular arches, with the outermost arches blending into the embankments at either end. The arches are adorned with rusticated stepped voussoirs and a roll-moulded band, topped by an ashlar parapet. There are two piers in the river that have convex cutwaters, and the soffits of the arches are constructed of brick.
