Description
Wood Nook Lock is located on the Calder Cut of the Aire and Calder Navigation and was opened in 1839. The engineers responsible for its construction were George Leather and Sons of Leeds. The lock is built from large dressed blocks of sandstone, with some concrete repairs, and features wooden gates. The upper entrance is quadrantly curved, while the lower entrance opens into the River Aire at an acute angle, featuring a bullnose on the outer side. Both the upper and lower gates are present, and there were formerly intermediate gates, which have been removed. The gates are now operated hydraulically and by electric power, having been manual until the 1960s. A modern control cabin and bridge are not included in the listing.
