Description
The Cross and Signpost is a historic structure located on the east side of Normanton High Street. It features the stump of a market cross, which may date back to the medieval period, topped by a lamp-post that was added in 1904. The base of the cross is made of sandstone, square in section, and approximately 1 metre high with a tapered design. Atop the stump, a cast-iron lamp-post is attached by a square clasping-socket and has a moulded cap adorned with four dolphins whose tails are positioned upright. The lamp standard is decorated and has arms or branches on three sides, each featuring scrolled wrought-iron brackets. Former pendants from the branches, which were inscribed cartouches, were missing at the time of the survey in 1986, although the terminal lantern has been restored.
