Description
The spinning or weaving range at Burley Mills, now used as offices, dates from the early 19th century and was built for the firm of Wormald, Gott and Wormald. The building is constructed of coursed sandy gritstone, with some parts rendered, and features a felted hipped roof. It is two storeys high and has eleven windows on the east side, positioned at a right angle to the road. The north end originally extended along the roadway to the west, across the mill yard's frontage, and was linked to an arched entrance that has since been demolished. The ground-floor openings have been altered, while the first-floor on the east and west sides retains original three-light mullion windows, some of which have been modified to two lights. The interior has not been inspected. This building is part of the significant Burley Mills group, and its early window design is reminiscent of the now-demolished cottages, making it a rare example of early factory design that was influenced by domestic architecture.
