Description

The weir on the River Aire, located in the Kirkstall Valley Nature Reserve, dates from the early 19th century and is constructed from gritstone. It measures approximately 35 meters wide and 3 meters high, featuring a bowed shape in plan and made of graded slabs. The flanking walls are edge-tooled, with the northeast wall serving as a revetment to the bank where the Abbey and St Anne's Mills tail race meet the river.

This weir is part of a significant development of the river and millrace, likely intended to increase the water volume at Burley Mills. It creates a head of water that is also regulated by a ford/weir located further upstream. This section of the river was likely straightened during the same period as the weir's construction.
