Description
The ford and weir on the River Aire, located at National Grid Reference 2632 3507, dates from the early 19th century. Constructed from gritstone, the structure is approximately 30 meters long and 2 meters wide. It features massive stone blocks set on edge that form both the weir and the roadway. Edge-tooled stone revetment walls, about 3 meters long, flank the approach roads on each river bank. This structure is part of the extensive river engineering works associated with the construction of Burley Mills and possibly St Anne's Mills, which was built by 1826. The ford was suitable for vehicular traffic and provided access to the island formed between the mill race and the river, with a bridge over the channel at St Anne's Mills, which has since been demolished.
