Description
Kirkstall Bridge is a road bridge over the River Aire, built in 1912 and altered in the 20th century. It was designed by J.A. Mackay, the City Engineer, for Leeds Corporation. The bridge features rusticated stone piers, cast-iron segmental arches, and parapet railings on the road deck. It has three arches that span the river, with the roadway sloping up from east to west. The abutments display stone plaques featuring the city coat of arms facing the river, along with vertical piercings that include stone seating at road level. These vertical piercings are also repeated in the spandrels of the arches and the parapet rails, which have pierced panels and raised circular motifs on the handrail. A cast-iron plaque at the east end of the north side bears raised lettering that commemorates the bridge's construction by the Leeds Corporation, noting its opening to traffic in June 1912 and listing various officials involved in its completion. Lamp posts were added in the mid-20th century.
