Description
The bridge, known as Bridge 221A, carries the Leeds and Bradford Turnpike over the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and its towpath on the eastern side. It was built in 1800 and is constructed from ashlar stone. The bridge features rusticated voussoirs that form an elliptical arch, which is flanked by semicircular rusticated buttresses that rise to create refuges at the roadside. There is also a secondary narrow round arch on the eastern side of the canal. At road level, there is a band, and the moulded parapet coping extends to circular bollards on the ramped roadside. The Leeds and Bradford Turnpike road was designed by Jonathan Teale, and this bridge is depicted in JMW Turner's painting of 'Kirkstall Lock' from 1824.
